Please join us as Dr. Alexis Abernathy helps us understand recent developments in brain imaging and the impact of these developments on racial cues and stereotyping. This presentation will examine how feelings of shame may impede self-reflection and interfere with our awareness potential racial biases, Learn how to become more aware of the emotions and the challenging interactions that are often a part of the discussions of racial dynamics that can occur in a variety of contexts.
This presentation will provide 3 ce units in the area of ethics.
At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to:
* Identify the key social psychology concepts that influence stereotyping.
* List three interventions that enhance therapists' ability to engage racial dynamics in the process of ethical
decision making.
* List two ways a therapist's background informs their perspective when addressing racial dynamics.
* Identify the primary ways a therapist's implicit racial biases informs his/her perceptions of others.
Presenter Bio: Dr. Alexis Abernethy is a Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Psychology in the Graduate
School of Psychology at Fuller Theological Seminary. She is also the Associate Provost for
Faculty Inclusion and Equity. She received her MA and PhD in clinical psychology from the
University of California, Berkeley. Her primary research interest is the intersection between
spirituality and health. Dr. Abernethy’s Spirituality and Health Lab includes three research
teams: Experience of Spirituality and Health-Related Outcomes; Spirituality, Cancer, and Health
Disparities; and Spirituality, Culture, and Eating Disturbance. She has received grants from the
following grantors: California Cancer Research Program, the National Cancer Institute, and the
John Templeton Foundation. She has numerous research publications and has also written in
two areas of clinical specialty, group therapy and cultural competency training. Dr. Abernethy
has a small private practice and is a Certified Group Psychotherapist and Fellow of the
American Group Psychotherapy Association.
